"The Tragedie of Macbeth" is a profound study in the psychology of evil. It can also be seen as a study of the Fall of Man. From Macbeth's initial condition of innocence and loyalty, the play traces his descent from the moment of his temptation to the moment of his death.

The play also operates in a universe of ruthless existential logic: where what one does is what one is, one becomes one's acts. This is both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth's tragedy. They believe that they can perform whatever acts of horror they choose yet remain innocent of the deed. Yet in the end, Lady Macbeth is driven mad by the memory of what she has done and Macbeth is transformed into something he no longer recognises as himself.

Yet was Macbeth damned from the beginning? Did he have a choice? Did the witches' prophecy of him as king automatically remove his Free Will and make him merely an instrument of Fate?

As Macbeth's actions and decisions abundantly make clear throughout the play, Fate is the life you choose.
